Bed Rotting-The New 'Self Care' Trend
Bed rotting, a term that has recently gained popularity among Generation Z since 2023, refers to the practice of spending excessive time in bed while engaging in activities like watching shows, scrolling through social media, or simply lounging without any productive outcome. This trend is often seen as a form of self-care or relaxation, with proponents claiming it offers a respite from the pressures of everyday life such as burn out and fatigue. Some argue it is healthy way for catch-up sleep that is to compensate for deprieved sleep during off work days.
After a few days of hectic schedule I have often found myself longing for that moment I will jump into my cosy bed and spend hours either hopping from one online site to another or just thinking meaningful and meaningless things. Sometimes I have a guilty feeling of laziness but now the internet calls it bed rotting. My favorite self care treat now doesn't sound that lazy anymore.
However, while taking time for oneself is essential, excessive bed rotting can have negative effects on health. Physically, prolonged inactivity can lead to issues such as poor posture, muscle atrophy, and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Mentally, it may exacerbate feelings of loneliness and anxiety, as isolation from social interactions can worsen emotional well-being. While spending a day in bed may not seem much. prolonged bed rotting may be a sign of depression.
Moreover, the lack of natural light exposure and physical activity can disrupt sleep patterns. It creates a cycle of lethargy that makes it difficult to maintain a healthy routine. The brain tends to associate the bed with other things other than sleep leading to sleep disruption.
In Kenya where joblessness is rife. the younger generation have lots of idle time at their disposal which many have often admitted they spent indoors hooked to their devices. To some bed rotting may sound like a more comforting way of passing time often online. While bed rotting may seem appealing, it is crucial for individuals to strike a balance between relaxation and active living for their overall well-being.
Should you feel like your bed rotting is getting out of hand, I recommend you try other healthier activities such as getting outdoor for some light exercise at your patio or a short walk in a nearby park, boulevard etc
